Ophelia’s face still emerges from the water: she is either dead or, aware of her imminent end, has gracefully closed her eyes for the last time, embracing her own fate. Like her, other flowers and light leaves are carried by the current.

Ophelia represents the only example of Salvi’s representation drawn from Shakespearean literature, and is evidently just a pretext to connect the figure of Ophelia to the more general figure of a person who is deeply carried away by their own feelings and desires, to the point of losing control.

The face of the young woman is compared to that of the flora surrounding her, which, detached from the source of life and survival, is irrevocably carried away into darkness, eventually disappearing from sight.
