Prophecy in the Cave

A young woman seated looks at the observer after having foretold their destiny, using the magical luminous sphere between her hands. The cave behind her reveals this fate: it is an omen of death.

Salvi’s goddesses are figures intrinsically linked to the concept of knowledge: knowledge of the truth, the past, or the future. Therefore, sibyls and witches often appear in his iconography as a means for the artist to insert magic and beauty into his compositions.

The background here is a secondary element that plays a narrative role relative to the main image: the cave taking the shape of a skull can represent both the destiny of a hypothetical character interacting with the seer and a “memento mori,” common in Daniel Salvi’s works, of which this work becomes almost a prototype.
