A young woman closes her eyes and opens up like a flower to the attentions of a young man, close enough to kiss her neck; but he cannot love, for he is nothing but a lifeless marble bust.
The image of “Desire” represents a visual short-circuit. The girl offers herself to him for intimate contact, and his gaze seems to confirm interest and passion; only it’s not the case, because he is a statue and has no life. Our gaze then returns to the girl, and we realize that the tension we recognize is nothing but the manifestation of newly discovered desires, crossing the threshold of adolescence.
This is not a representation of love by Salvi, but an elegant hymn to femininity and the legitimacy of female sexual desire, often hidden with a sense of guilt, as if it were impure and wrong.
