A young woman in the bloom of her years lies disheveled on a bed and is caught in the act of revealing her body, while at the same time inviting the lover beside her. Embroidered on her garment, a huge eye watches and judges the scene.
“The Original Sin” is one of the works richest in symbolism from the Author’s oeuvre and reveals part of its meaning starting from the title itself: although it is not Eve who is depicted, the scene represents the moment when the protagonist has decided to partake of a forbidden fruit initially not allowed to her. She does this by distancing herself from the luminous garments of her own chastity and liberating herself from the Eden—depicted on her gown—that covers and protects her body.
The young woman, by deciding to reclaim her own body, points to the sheet, purer than her gown, as a symbol of the purity of her drive, transcending any stigma. In the background, a new “memento mori”: the knob above the bed takes a shape similar to that of a funerary urn; the protagonist and her lover, in their flight from Eden, also discover their own mortality.
Their goal is to always remember to live every moment to the end, heedless of the watchful eye of dogma, ignored and forgotten.
